Intellectual Disabilities

Discussion 2 Week 4

Prader Willi Syndrome: a genetic disorder that causes obesity, intellectual disability, and shortness in height. There is no cure but treatment helps. It requires a medical diagnosis; chronic and can last for years or lifelong.

Typical classroom behaviors: Delayed motor and speech abilities. They may resist physical activities and even throw tantrums if their demands are not met. Children with Prader Willi Syndrome lack social development, may fall asleep in class, or even exhibit difficult behaviors.

I chose the grade level early childhood education and the academic skill is recognizing long vowels through reading stories.

Classroom modifications: In a classroom where a child may have a tantrum due to being diagnosed with Prader Willi Syndrome would be the portion of working in pairs. I would be sure to be in close proximity just in case the child began to act out. Instead of a sit down activity such as word cards I would modify the activity to maybe a vowel toss to encourage physical activity to ward against obesity.
