I had gone on vacation to Gatlinburg, Tennessee with a big group of my family. Since we’re all getting older, it’s harder for us to all get around to see each other so the fact that we could get a time where everyone was free for this vacation was a miracle. Not having service in the mountains and hiking trails also made the experience that much better. None of us were even tempted to look at our technology because we knew it wouldn’t work where we were at. We were fully able to soak in the full experience of the nature around us, the sounds of wildlife birds and creatures and the splashing of the waterfalls around us. We were fully concentrated on hiking and even when we were back at our cabin we didn’t have service, so we weren’t distracted by any technology. This vacation was extremely important to us because we got to spend quality family time and fully enjoy the nature around us. 2-Professor’s post (Question to me) So again, what it is about technology that makes the difference when we leave the modern world behind and get close to nature?  It can’t be a lack of technology, for we are never without it.  So does that mean it’s about be being without certain kindsof technology, and if so, what would that be? 3-Erin’s post Sahlins is describing hunters and gathers as the original affluent society.  Affluence is the ability to easily have one’s needs met, which can be the result of producing more or wanting less.  This population had a relatively low threshold of needs requirements, so they were able to spend very little time working to meet those needs.  This allowed them an ample amount of time for leisure. Currently, society seems to want to produce more as opposed to wanting less.  While we have many forms of technology to assist us in completing tasks, we now have many more needs that we expect to have satisfied.  This pur 4-Professor’s question (question to me) Anyone willing to go back?   So let’s assume that the gatherers and hunters really did lead lives of more leisure, less stress, and more connected to each other than we do, and let’s assume the culprit in large part has been technology.  If you could go back (but never come back to modern times) would you?  Why or why not?  Any takers?   What price comfort and convenience?  Maybe the “primitive” hunting and gathering life was more meaningful, more fulfilling…isn’t that worth some discomfort?  And don’t be too quick to say you are too addicted to modern conveniences.  Who’s to say you couldn’t be “cured”? 🙂 5-Julius’s post The big difference is that hunter gathers didn’t call a single place home. They always followed their prey and the seasons for their gathering. A lot of primitive technology was created because of the need to hunt and gather. It made life easier but also more work. Colonial women seem to be extremely harder because home is in one spot and taking care of home back then was a rough job. Even though there is more technology the sheer work that the colonial women had to do upkeep their home is extreme. It seems during the colonial day’s women took care of everything and everybody. As long as the men were providing and protecting their women everything else was left to them to handle. Modern technology has us all busy. Sometimes I think more than it should, but also technology makes our lives easier at the same time. 6-Emily’s post Government regulation is about identifying a specific way to restrict an individual behavior that can damage social agents and the entire system as a whole. Government regulation consists of requirements that the government imposes on private firms and individuals to achieve the overall government purpose. A government process is a long process, that provides solutions to different problems, not just the one addressed.         Self-regulation is an important role as it prevents incorrect and unfair practices which can result in gains but the whole organization will ultimately be hurt in the end. Self-regulation is  protection that helps the reputation and recognition of the group. Self-regulation is a fast process and offers solutions related to the actual problem.         The best method of promoting quality of care is government regulations as it is risk-free and keeps the organization up to standard legally and allows the proper standard to be taken place.  7- Heather’s post I believe using the “preferred providers” is a great way to regulate the cost and quality of health care. This is a good way to advertise as when using the terminology of “preferred”, will enlighten patients to the provider. Not only with the regulations of the contracts with the providers, but there are also stipulations that one has to follow to evaluate the quality of medical care. The Government form regulating Quality of Care (QOC) is through the tort liability system. Having this system helps regulate the bad providers by driving them out of business with consequences. The downside of tort liability, it does not actually identify the negligent provider as it has to be brought to the law. There have been negligence acts that are never brought to light. My opinion on this is it is great for this law to be there, but it has to be utilized to correct issues that may be happening. This is why each person needs to be an advocate for themselves and working in the healthcare field you need to provide your patients with the knowledge. 8-Keisha’s post The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being released without the patient’s knowledge or consent. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued the HIPAA Privacy Rule to implement the requirements of HIPAA. The HIPAA Privacy Rule standards address the use and disclosure of individuals health information by entities subject to the the Privacy Rule. It also contains standards for individuals right to understand and control how their health information is being used. A goal of the Privacy Rule is to make sure that individuals health information is properly protected while allowing the flow of health information needed to provide and promote high-quality healthcare, and protect the public’s health and well-being. 9-Rachel’s post The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, also known as HIPPA, was enacted by the federal government in 1996 (Harris, 2014). The purpose of this act was to protect patient’s privacy in a highly detailed format. Individual state laws are still required to be in place to protect patient confidentiality, which is not fully covered under HIPPA. Levels of privacy protection differs in each state due to each state having their own laws. When public interests are in question, information is required to be disclosed to the government, whether or not patients consent. Examples would include the COVID-19 pandemic or reporting gunshot wounds to law enforcement (2014). The government recognizes the need to protect individual patient privacy rights but cannot sacrifice the need to protect public health and safety. 10-Professor’s post (question for me) Do you think self-regulation could lead to other fraudulent practices or hide abuses? Please tell us your thoughts. Laurie
