Katelin’s post According Dunn “A grievance can be defined as a complaint that usually results from a misunderstanding, a misinterpretation, an alleged violation of a provision of the labor agreement, or discipline of an employee.” (Dunn, 2016). First step of a grievance starts with management, if it is not settled it will be passed to upper level management. It is the supervisors job to attempt to settle all grievances at the first step and as quickly as possible.  One very important part of the grievance process is keeping a record, detailed documentation of the process needs to be written and available when needed. When the union is involved it is important that the supervisor is available to the shop steward and aggrieved employee. Also very important that the supervisor remains calm and tries to keep involved individuals calm as well. The supervisor is held responsible for understanding and explaining the problem that needs to be resolved. I believe that all of these aspects are very important and should be done by all healthcare managers. I like to be organized and I feel as though for you to be a successful manager and handle situations you must be thorough and organized. Not letting situations escalate help to control the department and keep everyone in a calm and efficient state.  Kate Dunn, R. (2016) Dunn and Haimann’s Healthcare Management. Health Administration Press.  Michael’s post Dunn introduced Chapter 29 with a quote from Franco Santoro “Healing takes place when grievances are given ample and patient space to be acknowledged, when there is transparency and honesty, when everybody is given the chance to be heard, when nobody is excluded, when people can accept the energy of the conflict and use it as a major opportunity for growth.”(Dunn 2022). This quote is the embodiment of my outlook on handling grievances as a healthcare manager and leader. Clarity is the greatest gift we can give to our colleagues and proactively resolves grievances. Dunn states “The supervisor plays a vital role in the adjudication of grievances and must develop considerable skill in the use of adjudication techniques.”(Dunn 2022). These techniques involve careful listening and maintaining emotional control. As a manager you must investigate the problem, obtain the facts, and apply knowledge of organization policy and contract nuances.  Many of the textbook actions and duties of the manager for handling grievances are applicable. I look at them as tools and certain jobs are easier with certain tools. You may not need all the tools for a grievance but it’s good to have them in your toolbox just in case. I feel it is most important to be proactive in dealing with staff issues and complaints. First, you need to identify an employee complaint vs a grievance. I have a found most staff complaints can be solved before they escalate to a full blown grievance. Even these gripes benefit from adjunction techniques. As discussed throughout the textbook good communication is the foundation of a great manager. Careful listening to staff problems, identifying the causes and addressing the issue with emotional control can mitigate escalation to grievances. Reference  Dunn, R. (2022). Dunn & Haimann’s Healthcare Management. Health Administration Press. Erika’s post I found an article which I believe best describes how I want to be as a future leader.  In the article it states there are 5 main traits that help a person to be successful.  Greenwood states that showing humility, having a vision, acting as a mentor, demonstrating integrity, and valuing collaboration.  I believe these are amazing traits to help anyone start becoming successful.  A leader can show humility be showing they are not above any other employee.  They are willing to always help even if that means they take an assignment on the floors when a shift is short staffed.  They need to have set goals for the department and are able to stay positive to help achieve that.  Leaders should be role models for all other employees.  I believe that if leaders do something then it will trickle down to all the others of the department.  They need to help and mentor staff members with knowledge.  Colleagues need to be able to trust their manager.  If a manager states they are going to do something, then they need to follow through with their actions.  It allows the department to run cohesively.  Finally, if all these traits are exhibited, then it will allow the department to work together as a team.  All of these traits promote a positive and healthy work environment in order to provide the best care possible to the patients.     Reference Greenwood, H. (2022, July 7). Leadership in Healthcare: What Defines a Leader? University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. Retrieved October 8, 2022, from https://www.usa.edu/blog/leadership-in-healthcare/ Ali’s post Being a great leader takes hard work and dedication. There are many important things to remember in being a great leader and it is important to be open to constructive criticism from your employees. As a manager, it’s important to understand and respect different opinions. It doesn’t matter if I agree or not I need to communicate in a way that is considerate and respectful, take charge when necessary, and  be willing to learn from my mistakes. If I can embody these qualities in my leadership style, my team will follow suit. I should  have strong communication skills like Dunn and Haimann stated good communications act as necessary lubricants in all these processes.(Dunn and Haimann ,2021). I need to be able to convey  messages effectively , build relationships with my team members,  be organized and have a plan for every situation. I should stay on top of things, keep the team informed ,and be able to listen to people , understand their concerns and motivations. As a leader, I must also be able to think critically and solve any problem that come on my way. Reference Dunn, R. (2022). Dunn & Haimann’s Healthcare Management. Health Administration Press.  Holly’s post After listening to David Foster Wallace’s speech, it was very motivational. We all do tend to get stuck in our own minds in a pilot mode. How many times I get annoyed while driving in a day because someone is taking their sweet time. And when I’m standing in line at the grocery store frustrated because people are taking forever to get checked out. I am a very compassionate person. I like to think that I put others before myself. But really, I am selfish at when I am compassionate. Never do I really think about those people driving slowly or the clerk taking forever to check someone out at the store. I want to get to my goals and be done. I will become more aware of this while doing little things day to day an consider other people and what they may be dealing with. Our education really is our lifetime job. We are constantly growing and learning every day. Wither that be from a school setting or just daily life. During my time here at Siena Heights I would like to grow as a person taking in the understanding of others. My career choice is one in the health care field so compassion and understanding play a huge role in being successful. I don’t want to die before I have lived. I want to live and then die. I know there is no limit as to how much I can take away from this class and the remainder of my classes here at Siena Heights as long as I don’t just go through the motion of the courses and really let my mind expand. Cole’s post Hello Class,  Wallace’s insights into the educational experience from his speech to college students fit into my experience with my education at Siena Heights University. My liberal arts experience at this college has matched Wallace’s statement that liberal arts have helped not just fill me with stupid knowledge but to teach me how to think. This class in particular has helped with my view on coping skills and how to think critically.  I felt I knew these skills well enough, but I have a better understanding of how to utilize these skills now that I have been in this class. I hope that I can further not only the knowledge I learn but also different ways to think. Reference Foster Wallace, D (19, May 2013) This is Water Commencement Speech.
