Question 1: Describe a strategy in the listening domain you can use to activate prior knowledge before introducing a new lesson/concept.

Question 2: Student Portrait – Chue is a 5th grader who was born in Thailand and lived in a refugee camp his entire life until his arrival in the U.S two years ago.  While in the camps, he received some schooling in Thai and some in French, but schooling was interrupted because of family finances.  Chue has acquired a significant amount of social English but is struggling with academic language.  He participates willingly in class and has made significant gains in number knowledge.  He scored a 3.7 in Speaking, 4 in Listening, 1 in Reading and 1 in Writing.

Task – Ms. Wilson is teaching a unit on Esperanza Rising, she needs students to write a short essay connecting a short story from the book to the students’ personal life.  Given Chue’s English Language Proficiency level in reading and writing, how can she differentiate the task of reading the book and writing a short essay?
