Vanessa , How would you as a practicing nurse go about making a compelling case to organizational leaders and nursing executives of the need to have data-based systems that have the capacity to support “patient-driven” decisions in your current or future organization? I believe the most important part of bringing forth the idea of a new technology or other implementation to add in the workplace is having all the necessary and compelling information to provide your organizational leaders and executives. Being that healthcare is meant to be patient-centered, with the primary goal to provide the best care possible for those patients, this must be a talking point when bringing forth this new information. What objections do you think the primary organizational leaders may have against your recommendations, and why? The cost of implementing new EHR technology may be a potential objection, being that keeping costs low is always a topic of conversation within any organization. Another objection may be regarding the potential for hackers and security breaching, being that “an influx of high-profile data breaches has plagued the sector during the COVID-19 pandemic” (Pilares et al, 2022). How specifically would this type of information system add capacity to enhancing patient safety and positive outcomes? EHR systems have proven to decrease patient information errors as well as medication errors drastically, proving to improve patient safety. This alone creates not only a more positive outcome for the patients themselves, but for the organization implementing these systems. Serious legal ramifications can come from a medication error which results in harm to a patient, and systems such as the EHR help keep hospitals and healthcare team from being legally pursued.

Erik How would you as a practicing nurse go about making a compelling case to organizational leaders and nursing executives of the need to have data-based systems that have the capacity to support “patient-driven” decisions in your current or future organization? As a practicing nurse I would make a compelling case to my organizational leaders and nursing executives by finding a problem that can be solved by utilizing data based systems that have the capacity to support patient driven decision. This could be something such as addressing patient satisfaction by addressing readmission rates or satisfaction surveys. This data can then be analyzed and applied to the organizations systems to improve patients care. I believe that these data based systems can also decrease costs and ultimately lead to cost savings for the organization. What objections do you think the primary organizational leaders may have against your recommendations, and why? I think the initial objection that organizational leaders may have is resistance to change. Healthcare organizations are constantly changing as a result of advancing technology, new discoveries and changing treatment patterns (Nilsen, 2020). One would think that this would embrace change, but in reality it goes against natural human needs for a stable environment. The unknown can be challenging and healthcare organization may not want to take the risk to change what they are comfortable with. How specifically would this type of information system add capacity to enhancing patient safety and positive outcomes? Data based systems that have patient driven decisions can help better provide care and improve patients safety. Improved communication by utilizing these systems can lead to reduced medication errors and better communication between providers and patients. This can lead to early detection by analyzing trends thus resulting in better patient outcomes.
