- What makes a special occasion?
A special occasion could be when something significant happens in someones life such as birthdays, graduations, weddings, having a baby, etc. It could also be when someone receives an award of some sort, or maybe just a recognition of something they have done or accomplished.
- How can you apply, to special occasion speeches, the speaking skills you have worked on throughout the term?
I can apply the speaking skills I’ve worked on throughout the term to a special occasion speech by making sure my speech is clear, on topic, and my voice expresses the intent of how I feel about the occasion. People need to be able to understand what I am talking about, why I am talking about it, and what the occasion is about.

The special occasion speech that I heard recently was the keynote speaker at my commencement ceremony in Charlotte. She was clear, insightful, powerful, and she knew who her audience was. She spoke to the whole graduating class like she knew all of us and gave us insight into what we may expect after college. She gave us tips on things to do and other things to avoid. It was one of the best speeches of my entire life. She was never boring, uninterested, and she kept contact with all of us. She didn’t look down at her notes all the time. She could have persuaded me to to do anything with how she spoke and how confident and powerful she seemed.
I realized after listening to her speak that my public speaking skills were nothing compared to hers. I also knew that she had years of experience and I haven’t. I learned that when I make a speech that I want everyone to remember, I really need to know who I’m talking to and how confident I am in speaking it to make it great.
