  • Read this article: Ten Rules of Good (and Bad) Studying by Barbara Oakley, PhD, PE, from her new book, A Mind For Numbers: How to Excel at Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra)
  • Spend a little time thinking about when you have been successful in classes
  • Create a journal entry where you identify specific strategies for you to be successful in this course.

Week 2.

This week: Create a Research Question

Based on what you have learned in this segment, come up with a research question that would be useful to you.
Your question should be based on some aspects of psychology – the study of human behavior.

The question should be specific, testable, and measurable

Week 3.

Watch this brief video on the concept of being “mind blown”.

Then reflect on how you feel when you learn something new – either in a class, at work, or elsewhere. How do the concepts of classical and operant conditioning apply to that feeling? How might you use those concepts to create an environment for successful learning and/or to motivate studying?

Week 4.

In this week’s journal, using the suggestions in the course, my feedback, and your own research (give it some effort, but not hours), draft a research study design based on your research question.

Define who would make appropriate subjects (would any one work? specific age? specific culture? other attributes).
Identify how you would gather the information using the techniques from the text (ask? observe? test? measure?).
What potential biases would you need to be on the lookout for?

Consider this article from the American Psychological Association, How to Be a Wise Consumer of Psychological Research in how you structure your study.

Week 5.

Now that we are about halfway through the term, go back and read your thoughts on effective study methods for you in the Week 1 journal entry.
Reflection and revision is an important part of the learning process.

NPR’s This I Believe: Listen to JWU Professor and Sci-fi/fantasy author, Ken Schneyer speak about his perspective on the power of revision
For any who may be interested, here is a link to one of his short stories: The Plausibility of Dragons.

In your journal post, reflect on whether you have followed those suggestions, whether whatever strategy you have been using has been effective, and how you will approach the second half of the course.
